International migration and its short‐term effect on partnership stability

Abstract Up to now, we know only a little about the causal effect of international migration on partnership stability, with few existing analyses being restricted internal or from less developed countries Global North. Using longitudinal data German citizens [the Emigration and Remigration Panel Study plus Family (pairfam)], this study contributes literature primarily in two ways: first, by comparing migrants nonmigrants at origin applying appropriate methods (Entropy Balancing Discrete Time Proportional Hazards Models), was studied. Second, assessing (non‐)mobile allows looking these effects context highly industrialized welfare state. Additional general migration, differences between emigrants remigrants are studied — which has not been done before, except for Latin American context. To advance our understanding underlying mechanisms, role further characteristics is investigated. Findings show that increases risk union dissolution compared no higher emigrants. The reasons play an additional explaining dissolution.
